About nine people attended Prayer, Evangelism and the Gospel on March 9th. Each of the three aspects of PEG tie in very strongly with each other. So when we gather as a church family with the intention of having a more intentionally evangelistic mindset, we focus on each element. Prayer, Evangelism and the Gospel is a mission of our church family as a whole and it is our opportunity to love others as Christ loved us and to reach out to our family, neighbours, friends, community and country.
Our prayer section of the evening also involved a sharing time. We shared of times since the last meeting we attended, where we were given the opportunity to utilize an intentionally evangelistic mindset to share the gospel (either in big ways or small). Some of us shared positive experiences and others of us shared time where we let the opportunity slip.
In groups of three or four, we gathered together to pray for each other and that we will use the opportunities that are provided to us in ways that glorify God.
Our gospel sharing time was short and extremely practical at this meeting. In our handout we went through a concise explanation of the gospel where we filled in blanks with key words.
We also took a lot at a short quote off the Of First Importance Blog:
"The law requires works of human achievement; the gospel requires faith in Christ's achievement. The law makes demands and bids us obey; the gospel brings promises and bids us believe." - John Stott, The Message of Galatians
We also got into a discussion about fears that keep us from sharing the gospel and then what kinds of practical help is useful in diminishing those fears.
Conrad encouraged us by reminding us of Marina's strategy and Marina shared a bit about that experience for her as well.
The Doing - Culmination of Prayer, Evangelism & the Gospel
Our first order of business in the evangelism time was to recount any stories that resulted from the Valentines project. A number of people shared that they had used the valentine as a gift for their friends or neighbours, people who they wanted to reach out to. It is very encouraging to see God using our group to reach out to those around us! We saw examples of that when talking about the valentines as well as in the prayer section.
We also discussed a few new ideas, including one presented by Olive and Marina on behalf of the Gideons. They shared a vision of blanketing the town with a distribution of Bibles through a program called TIP. More details on this will likely follow.
In the short term department, we hammered out some of the main details in hosting a family movie night (or two) over the school March Break. We will be showing Hoodwinked on Thursday March 18th and possibly another movie on Tuesday March 16th. This outreach event is a act of love and appreciation to our community. If you'd like to be involved please contact Christina.
Our meeting concluded with the decision to have our next meeting on April 12th.
